Barcelona or PSG: who’ll win the only treble of the 2024/2025 Football season?

by Jolayemi Jones

25 Apr 2025

Forget unbeaten seasons, 100-point campaigns and CL three-peats. The treble stands alone as club football’s most illustrious achievement. While other accomplishments fade into memory eventually, winning a league title, domestic cup competition and the UEFA Champions League trifecta in a single season is an achievement that elevates mere mortals to the pantheon of footballing gods. Why? Because it shows a level of dominance rarely seen in Football. In fact, only eight football clubs in history have done this – Celtic, Barcelona, Bayern, Inter, PSV, Manchester City, Manchester United and Ajax.

Even Real Madrid, regarded as European football’s greatest ever club with their record of 15 European Cups, have never conquered this pinnacle, to put into perspective just how exclusive this club is.

It is hard to argue against an achievement that combines all the best bits of other legendary achievements into one, and in one season. The treble tests quality while demanding relentless consistency, squad depth and mental fortitude across three grueling competitions. One slip, one bad night, and the dream evaporates. Case in point, Inter Milan this week.

And then, there were two!

Just days ago, the treble race had three contenders. But on Wednesday night, Internazionale’s treble dreams were emphatically crushed by their fiercest rivals. AC Milan’s 3-0 demolition of them in the Coppa Italia semifinal was a statement, made sweeter for the Rossoneri by the fact it ended the Nerazzurri’s quest for a second treble, having already done it back in 2010 with Jose Mourinho at the helm.

That result left only Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain still standing in the hunt for club football’s holy grail. Both are currently coached by men who have already delivered trebles in their careers; Hansi Flick with Bayern in 2020 and Luis Enrique with Barcelona in 2015.

For PSG, the path looks clear but not without peril. The Ligue 1 title is already sewn up, and a Coupe de France final against Stade Reims, the historic club of football legends like Just Fontaine and Raymond Kopa, awaits. On paper, it’s theirs to lose. But the real hurdle remains the Champions League, where past heartbreaks loom large. They were in this exact position last year, but failed to even score a goal over two legs against a Borussia Dortmund side they were favourites to beat. This is another chance to do it, but one slip in Europe, and their treble dreams vanish.

Barcelona’s road, meanwhile, is far more treacherous. This Saturday, they face Real Madrid in an El Clásico Copa del Rey final, a potential first trophy that could ignite their charge. La Liga is nearly in their grasp, but with Madrid still lurking, nothing is guaranteed. And then there’s the Champions League, where every knockout round feels like a battle for survival. Compared to PSG, their treble pursuit looks tougher, doesn’t it?

So, who will make history? And who’ll buckle under the weight of expectation? And, for those who love to ride the wave of high-stakes drama, where does the smart betting value lie?

Let’s break it down

Barcelona’s Path Back to the Elite

Raphinha.jpg

Barcelona’s season has been a masterclass in consistency - a near-flawless campaign interrupted only by a brief mid-season stumble. While many already crown them as Europe’s best this term, such praise rings hollow without silverware to show for it. For a team this dominant, lifting just one trophy from their remaining three pursuits would feel almost like underachievement.

This team, littered with youngsters, has a chance to enter a special echelon reserved for only the greatest of the greatest, a chance to proclaim themselves treble winners like legends of the past. If they were to do it, they would become the first club to do it three times, breaking their current tie with Bayern Munich. It is a stick they still use to beat their eternal rivals, Real Madrid, who were also in the treble race until they got thrashed by Arsenal in the UCL quarter finals.

Copa Final

The first big hurdle is the Copa Del Rey final on Saturday. Recent history suggests that Barcelona should have nothing to fear here. Flick’s men have already humiliated Real Madrid twice this season: a 4-0 demolition at the Bernabéu followed by a ruthless 5-2 dismantling in the Spanish Super Cup final. Yet this clash comes with complications. Their biggest headache would be the fact they are missing Alejandro Balde and Robert Lewandowski through injury.

Madrid themselves have notable absences like Eduardo Camavinga, Ferland Mendy, who’re both out for extended periods. They’re also sweating over the fitness of Kylian Mbappé.

Despite putting 9 goals past Real Madrid in their two clashes so far and being the bookies’ favourite ahead of the game, Barcelona will still need to be wary because of the higher stakes. Real Madrid need no extra motivation, but the chance to play spoiler to their arch-rivals’ historic ambitions will have them channeling the same derby fury that saw Milan dismantle Inter’s treble hopes.

Finals transform logic on its head, and Madrid’s big-game pedigree means this Clásico carries more than just silverware at stake - it’s about legacy, pride, and potentially derailing Barcelona’s date with destiny.

We’ve priced Barcelona at 2.13 to win this game. And considering how disjointed Real Madrid have looked recently, along with how Barcelona scored for fun against them in their last two clashes, you do not need to be a bet wizard to find these odds enticing.

This is a rare chance for you to double your money and make a significant profit with a smart betting stake on a truly world-class team!

La Liga Title Race

While Barcelona remain overwhelming favorites to reclaim La Liga, one final obstacle stands in their way - a high-stakes home clash against Real Madrid in two weeks. Even a potential derby defeat would still leave them a point clear heading into the season’s final three matches, though their run-in includes challenging fixtures that could test their nerve.

The title race could see dramatic swings depending on that pivotal Clásico result, but Flick’s men remain firmly in control of their destiny. Barring a spectacular collapse, the league trophy appears destined for Camp Nou. And yet, in football, as Barcelona know all too well, nothing is certain until the mathematics confirm it.

UCL – The Ultimate Prize

The Champions League represents Barcelona’s holy grail, a trophy that has eluded them since their legendary 2015 treble; made more painful by watching their eternal rivals win the competition five times in that time. This is the competition that means the most to their fans and even falling short of the treble would not sting as much if they get to lift the iconic big-eared trophy this season.

Standing in their way are two brutal Champions League fixtures against Inter Milan, but their most dangerous opponent may be exhaustion itself. With matches coming every three days in this grueling finale to the season, recent performances have shown worrying signs of a squad running on fumes. Yet despite the physical toll, bookmakers still install them as slight favorites - a testament to their quality when the stakes are highest. Can they dig deep enough for one final push toward European glory?

PSG’s Quest for Immortality

Ousmane Dembele celebrating in a PSG jersey

PSG have quietly evolved their strategy, and even skeptics are coming around now. For the first time, their Champions League ambitions aren’t tied to assembling superstar names. Gone are the days of chasing every available superstar - last summer’s restrained response to Mbappé’s exit spoke volumes about their new strategy of prioritizing squad balance and tactical cohesion. The club appears to have learned from its failed attempts to replicate Real Madrid’s Galactico model, with Luis Campos now implementing a more sustainable team-building philosophy.

Watch this PSG side for just ninety minutes, and you’ll feel it - something fundamentally different in the DNA of their play. Even substitutions and frequent line-up changes do not affect their rhythm or the synchrony of their play. There’s a renewed hunger in their pressing, a selflessness in their buildup, and more evidence of the cultural shift happening at the club.

But there is an irony: in a system designed to diminish individual egos, we’re witnessing Ousmane Dembélé’s metamorphosis into the world class player we always glimpsed flashes of. And who knows? He might just blossom into the kind of superstar they once had to break the bank for. Only this time, they won’t need to.

Ligue 1 down

Calling this a title race would be generous - PSG had wrapped up Ligue 1 by January as challengers tripped over their own inconsistencies. Their 4-peat secured, the real drama now lies in chasing perfection: just 270 minutes from completing France’s first-ever unbeaten campaign. Remarkably, this new-look squad could achieve what no previous iteration managed - and in their very first season together.

Coupe de France

Even in the Coupe de France, the stars seemed to align for PSG - not that they needed any help. Their biggest competitors crumbled against lower-league and weaker sides long before the semifinals, clearing the path for what should have been a straightforward clash with second-tier surprise package Dunkerque.

But football loves a plot twist. Within 30 chaotic minutes, PSG found themselves staring down a shocking 2-0 deficit, a humbling reminder that no opponent can be taken lightly. Yet, as champions do, they steadied themselves, turned the tide, and ultimately cruised to a 4-2 victory, booking their place in the final.

The ultimate David vs Goliath challenge now awaits. PSG enter as overwhelming favorites, yet there’s intrigue - Reims are one of only two Ligue 1 clubs (along with Nantes) to avoid defeat against the champions this season in both meetings. Can they complete an improbable hat-trick when it matters most?"

The Big CL Dream

Strip away all the noise—this is PSG’s obsession. They would surrender every domestic trophy in a heartbeat if it meant finally lifting the UEFA Champions League. Since the Qatari takeover in 2011, this has been their white whale, the one prize that has slipped through their fingers time and again.

They’ve come agonizingly close, most notably in 2020, when a single goal separated them from glory against Hansi Flick’s relentless Bayern Munich. A win that night would have sealed an immortal quadruple (Ligue 1, Coupe de France, Coupe de la Ligue, and the UCL). Instead, it was Bayern who completed the treble, leaving PSG with yet another ‘what if’ in their haunted European history. After years of heartbreak, near-misses, and tactical reinventions, the dream remains the same: conquer Europe, or nothing else truly matters.

This isn’t the old PSG, the one that relied on star power and flickers of individual brilliance. This is something far more dangerous: a team in the truest sense, one that moves, presses, and attacks with chilling synchronization. Europe has taken notice, and the bookmakers now slot them just behind Barcelona as favorites, a nod to their ruthless evolution under Luis Enrique.

Yet one formidable hurdle remains: Arsenal, a side that beat them with ease in the UCL group stage. The Gunners now stand between PSG and their second Champions League final, and with it, a shot at the one trophy that has eluded them.

All the signs point to this being their moment. But in the Champions League, destiny is never guaranteed, only earned. Can they do it?

Who Will Win A Treble This Season?

As we enter the final weeks of the season, one truth remains: the treble is football’s ultimate test of greatness. For Barcelona, it’s a chance to cement their legacy as Europe’s modern dynasty. For PSG, it represents the final step in their decade-long evolution from pretenders to true contenders. With everything on the line, these two remaining challengers stand on the brink of immortality.

Will Barcelona complete their triumphant resurgence? Can PSG finally conquer their European demons?
