The weekend’s action served up very few surprises outside of Serie A, with online betting enthusiasts able to cash out some major wins. Even Manchester United’s defeat at Brighton wasn’t much of a surprise, considering how that match-up has gone in recent years.

If you went with our prediction of a Brighton straight win, you would have won easily. EPL football predictions have gone well over the first two games of the season, evidenced by the teams you see at the top of the pile there.  

But a look at the La Liga table standings shows us a bit of a surprise mixed with the usual suspects. Celta Vigo top the league with maximum points and a +3 Goal Difference. Also in the top 6 is newly promoted Leganes, who have garnered 4 points so far, avoiding defeat entirely. 

Last season’s 3rd placed team, Girona, are yet to register a victory and sit in 19th place with just 1 point from 2 games. Even Real Madrid have dropped points, despite adding Kylian Mbappe to the reigning Champions League and La Liga winning team. Where some unpredictability is, there is value to be gotten.

**Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona** 

FC Barcelona have successfully navigated a tough line-up of games to start the season, defeating Valencia at the Mestalla before beating Athletic Club at the Camp Nou on Saturday. A visit to Rayo is easier on paper, but it is still a tricky game, especially as Rayo are one of their bogey teams.  

Rayo have avoided defeat in their first two games despite playing both games away from home, winning a tough game at the Reale Arena in San Sebastian against Real Sociedad before holding Getafe to a goalless draw. 

Now playing at the Estadio de Vallecas, it will certainly not be easy for Barcelona, especially as Rayo will be buzzing after securing the signature of Colombian star, James Rodriguez.  

Rayo have taken points off Barcelona in 5 of their last 6 games, winning three times. In fact, Barcelona’s only win in that run came the last time the two faced off towards the end of last season, a game that ended 3-0. Barcelona’s last league win in Vallecas came 6 years ago, after being 2-1 down by the 86th minute.  

**Full time Prediction: It makes more sense to play it safe here, considering Rayo’s form and Barcelona’s recent history against them.**

**Atletico Madrid vs Espanyol**

Espanyol have become something of a bogey team for Atletico, especially since the mid-2010s. Their last two games ended in draws. 

The last game, which ended 3-3, saw Espanyol comeback from 3-0 down to grab a badly needed point to deny Diego Simeone’s side. That said, Espanyol have started the season poorly on their return. So far, they are the only side that has failed to score a goal and they are one of two, along with Valencia, still yet to claim any point. 

Meanwhile, Atletico returned home to destroy Girona 3-0, after an explosive first game of the season at Villarreal that ended in a draw. One thing they are not struggling for is goals, having scored 5 in their first two games. 

With the signings of Alexander Sørloth and Julian Alvarez, and Antoine Griezmann still pulling the strings, many more goals will surely be scored by this exciting Atletico side.  

Espanyol’s form makes this look pretty straightforward on paper. Having spent a season in Segunda and made it back to La Liga via the playoffs, they are expected to be in the relegation dogfight. 

It is clear to see why no one is really expecting them to pull any surprises by being far away from that. Atletico, on their part, look impressive and ready to deal with teams who aren’t of comparable quality.

**Carl Zeiss Jena vs Bayer Leverkusen**

German Champions, Bayer Leverkusen, play their DFB Pokal tie against Carl Zeiss Jena, who play at amateur level in the German fourth tier, Regionalliga Nordost. In their division, Jena are the dominant side, winning all five of their games so far this season and racking up goals for/goals against stats of 17-6. 

Their perfect start to the season will be under serious threat in front of their fans as Leverkusen come to town on the back of an unbeaten run in German football that dates back over a year.  

Leverkusen have started the season with the same things that characterized most of their historic 23/24 season, notably late goals that turn defeats into draws, and draws into wins.

They will be hoping to not have to be drawn into the same kind of drama against a fourth-tier side, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if they made this one complicated for no reason, as they tend to do.  

**Full time Prediction: This should be a straightforward win for Bayer Leverkusen. Jena are simply no match for them and the gulf in class could be reflected in the scoreline. As long as there is no complacency from Leverkusen, we expect goals in this game.**

**Real Mallorca vs Sevilla**

After an excellent preseason, Real Mallorca have had a slightly underwhelming start to the season. Following up an impressive opening day draw against a star-studded Real Madrid side with a defeat at Osasuna has slightly dampened expectations about what they can go on to do this season. 

New manager Jagoba Arrasate will also be wary as his homecoming was unpleasant, but he will be looking to rally his troops against a Sevilla team seeking resurgence. At home, Mallorca are a tough nut to crack, as Real Madrid were reminded a week ago.

Like Aguirre before him, Arrasate will be working to ensure that reputation remains and teams are overwhelmed by the vociferous atmosphere as well as Mallorca’s penchant for bullying teams into relinquishing points. 

Sevilla, on their part, have been less than stellar despite the promise of the new season. Drawing at Las Palmas was somewhat acceptable but the defeat at home to Villarreal, which followed, and the manner in which it happened certainly left a sour taste. 

An away day in Mallorca is hardly the ideal place to bounce back, but if any team can, it is Sevilla. New manager Garcia Pimienta has his work cut out for him. 

**Full time Prediction: There will be goals in this one. Sevilla have already seen 7 goals scored in the two games they have played so far, while Mallorca have shown themselves to be very attacking at home. **Las Palmas vs Real Madrid** 

There is a little trouble in paradise; the gods that were promised are not setting fire to the rain yet. After a great debut that saw him score his first goal for the club, Kylian Mbappe has now failed to score in his first two La Liga games. Vini Jr isn’t playing his best either and Rodrygo has looked inconsistent. 

The absence of the now-retired Toni Kroos is also being felt, with Madrid’s midfield failing to gel so far. Their performances have been laboured and the loss of Jude Bellingham to a muscle injury has made things worse.
 
In spite of all that, they have still managed to get 4 points out of 6 to start the season, with a +3 Goal Difference. Things certainly don’t seem as bleak as the press are making it out to be, but questions are still being asked.  

Meanwhile, Las Palmas are yet to win a game under their new manager, Luis Carrion, despite scoring 3 goals so far. Their leaky defence has let in 4 goals, a bad sign with Real Madrid coming to town.

They will have to be at their best if they will handle the threat from the Madrid front 3. With rumours of Carlo Ancelotti tweaking the formation to bring the best out of his top 2 assets, Las Palmas could be up against a baptism of fire.  

**Full time Prediction: Real Madrid will be expected to deal with the Las Palmas threat fairly easily and triumph in this game. A lot will depend on them rather than their opponents. Perhaps, Mbappe will finally get his first goal too. He already came close in his last game, after getting into good positions and taking fine shots that needed exceptional saves to deny him**

**Real Sociedad vs Alavés** 

Real Sociedad’s opening day defeat at home to Rayo Vallecano has been quickly forgotten after their victory at Espanyol last weekend. They conceded too many chances and shots but managed to get through the game without conceding, which is a good sign. 

Now back home to face a sometimes-problematic Alavés team, they know what is required to get the win. Another victory will further smoothen things out and set them on the path to their goals for the season. 

Alavés will be without Aleksandar Sedlar after the defender picked up a red card in the goalless draw against Betis last weekend. They, like Real Sociedad, faced a baptism of fire from their opponents but weathered the storm to come out of the game with a point. 

They will be expecting more of the same when they visit San Sebastian this midweek. They have not beaten their opponents since 2020, but they have competed strongly in the last 4 games between them: 2 draws and two narrow defeats.

**Inter vs Atalanta**

This is, perhaps, the trickiest game of the week. Inter are recognized as the best team in Italy, by far, a title they earned by winning Serie A by 19 points last year.

In truth, it could have been more if they didn’t take their feet off the gas in the final two months of the season. They have started the new season still looking like the dominant force they have been, despite dropping points on the first matchday.  

Atalanta started the season with an impressive 4-0 demolition of Lecce before being brought back down to earth, losing last weekend to Torino after taking the lead. 

That kind of inconsistency is what has held them back from being genuine title contenders in recent seasons. Their European triumph last season showed that they have it in them to do it, but they will need to put together a strong run in order to sustain the excellence they show on their best day.  

**Full time Prediction: Inter have not lost to Atalanta since 2018 and have won their last 5 meetings. Their last game at San Siro ended in a 4-0 win for Inter. This looks like another game that Inter will dominate and win, but Atalanta do deserve some respect after their recent exploits.
