As the trade deadline and All-Star weekend loom, NBA players are intensifying their performances, aiming to either solidify their positions within their current teams or attract interest for potential moves. We’re looking at you, D’Angelo Russell. With anticipation building for an exciting weekend in the NBA, let's delve into a preview of what lies ahead and offer some basketball predictions to whet your appetite for the action. 

**Philadelphia 76ers vs. Brooklyn Nets**

The 76ers recently snapped their four-game losing streak thanks to a stellar performance by first-time All-Star Tyrese Maxey, who poured in a career-high 51 points. Maxey has been nothing short of remarkable since the James Harden trade and is considered a front-runner for the Most Improved Player of the Year award. However, the 76ers continue to be without reigning MVP Joel Embiid, who sustained a knee injury during the loss to the Golden State Warriors. Embiid's absence, coupled with the losing streak it has precipitated, has caused the 76ers to slip from 3rd to 5th in the Eastern Conference standings.  

The Nets will head to Philadelphia hoping to take advantage of a depleted Sixers. Among those travelling with the Nets is Ben Simmons, whose return to Philly is bound to elicit a hostile reception from the crowd. Simmons famously demanded a trade from the Sixers a few seasons ago following a playoff collapse, where he bore much of the blame. The Australian guard recently made his comeback from a two-month injury layoff in a resounding 147-114 victory over the Jazz. Despite the extended absence, Simmons showed no signs of rust, putting up 10 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting along with 11 assists and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, the Nets find themselves in less-than-ideal form, languishing in 11th position after a string of seven losses in their last 10 games. Nevertheless, the return of Simmons to Philly ensures this matchup will be one not to be missed.

● Philadelphia 76ers to win 

**Atlanta Hawks vs. Golden State Warriors**

In this matchup, both teams will play the second game of a back-to-back, likely leading to a high-scoring affair as fatigue may limit their defensive efforts. The Hawks will have hosted the Suns just 24 hours prior, while the Warriors will have travelled to Memphis the day before. Even without the back-to-back factor, good defense isn't expected from either side. The Hawks are ranked 27th (out of 30) in Defensive Rating and are less than a week removed from giving up 73-points to Luka Dončić.  

The Warriors haven’t been great on the defensive end either. They’re ranked 22nd on that list and have given up 125 points or more in 8 of their last 13 games. Given these defensive struggles, we're leaning towards an over on points. In their last meeting in Golden State on January 25th, they combined for 246 points. With the sharpshooting prowess of Steph Curry and Trae Young, two icons of basketball marksmanship, we expect them to surpass their previous scoring output.

**New York Knicks vs. Los Angeles Lakers**

The Lakers expect to have LeBron James and Anthony Davis back for the second of their 3-game road trip to the East. Both all-stars were absent when they visited archrivals, the Boston Celtics on Thursday night in a game they dominated from tip-off, winning 114-105. Austin Reaves was the star of the evening as he put up 32 points, more than NBA all-star duo, Jayson Tatum & Jaylen Brown combined.  

The Lakers will face a tougher test when they land in New York to face the Knicks. The Knicks are playing some of the best basketball on the planet, which, honestly is about as shocking as finding a penguin in the Sahara. Riding a remarkable 9-game winning streak, they stand among just three teams in the league to achieve such a feat this season. This stellar performance has propelled them to 3rd place in the Eastern Conference NBA Standings. Recently named All-star Guard, Jalen Brunson is coming off a 40-point game in the win over the Pacers. He's averaging an impressive 27.1 points per game while shooting 41.7% from beyond the arc. Despite the Lakers' impressive display in their victory over the Celtics, another win at Madison Square Garden seems like too much to ask against a Knicks team that ranks in the top 10 in Offensive, Defensive, and Net ratings.

● New York Knicks to Win 

**Dallas Mavericks vs. Milwaukee Bucks**

Doc Rivers’ tenure as Head Coach of the Bucks hasn’t gotten off to the best start following back-to-back road defeats to the Nuggets and the Trail Blazers. It's somewhat ironic considering he could potentially coach at the All-Star game, but that's a tale for another time. The Bucks' road struggles have been well-documented, currently standing at 11-11 after 22 games. Fortunately for them, the Mavericks haven't been intimidating hosts either. Jason Kidd's squad has a 14-12 record in Dallas, no thanks to a few health issues within the team. Nonetheless, they can rely on the superstar Guard, Luka Dončić, who consistently rises to the occasion.  

Dončić ranks second in points per game (34.7), second in three-pointers made (155), and third in assists per game (9.6). Arguably one of the most lethal offensive threats in the history of basketball, he's nearly unstoppable when in peak form. His recent performances have been nothing short of spectacular: a career-high 73-point game against the Hawks, a triple-double with 17 assists versus the Kings, and a 45-point display in a win over the Magic, where he narrowly missed yet another triple-double by one rebound. Bucks' Forward Giannis Antetokounmpo will undoubtedly be eager to make his mark in this showdown. Currently ranked fourth in points per game and fifth in rebounds per game, he'll be itching to guide his team back to the win column. Another high-scoring affair seems likely, especially considering both teams' placement in the bottom half of defensive ratings.

**Chicago Bulls vs. Sacramento Kings**

A well-rested Bulls team will host a likely jaded Sacramento Kings who will play on the second night of a back-to-back. This will be the 6th of 7 straight road games for the Kings, and, impressively, they’ve won 3 of the first 4 (the 5th is yet to be played at the time of writing). We expect some aggressiveness from the Kings in this game, especially after being notably absent from the recently unveiled All-Star roster. They are the only team among the top six in both the Eastern and Western Conferences without representation. Point Guard De'Aaron Fox and Forward Domantas Sabonis, both All-Stars last season, may feel overlooked this time around and their omission could add an extra layer of motivation as they take on the Bulls. 

Games between these two sides have been relatively low scoring in recent times and we expect that to continue. We also expect the Chicago Bulls to win this game, thanks to their extra few days of rest. While star forward Zach LaVine remains sidelined through a foot injury, we expect his teammates to have more than enough to secure the win.

**Washington Wizards vs. Phoenix Suns**

The Wizards' abysmal home record speaks volumes, having secured just 3 wins out of 22 home games all season, the worst in the NBA. It's unlikely they'll add another victory to their tally when facing off against the Suns. With a playoff berth well out of reach, they find themselves as “sellers” as the trade deadline looms. Players like Kyle Kuzma may find themselves on the trading block and may not suit up as the team shifts into full tanking mode. 

As the Suns wrap up their exhaustive 7-game road trip, fatigue may indeed be an issue, especially considering this game marks the second of a back-to-back. Nevertheless, they understand the significance of facing the Wizards, knowing it is the easiest basketball court a visiting team can snatch a win on. Additionally, emotions will run high as Bradley Beal returns to Washington, where he spent 11 years before his trade request last summer. Injuries that have hindered Beal’s adaptation to the Suns, resulting in a 9-year low of 17.2 points per game and career-low in steals per game (0.8). However, Beal is expected to put on a show on his special night.

● Phoenix Suns to win  

**San Antonio Spurs vs. Cleveland Cavaliers**

The Cavs have turned a corner in recent weeks and boast an NBA joint-best 9-1 record in their last 10 games, including wins in each of their last 4 games. This improvement has been built on their defense rather than offense. In that 10-game stretch, they rank 7th in offensive rating and #1 in defensive rating, showcasing their ability to stifle opponents while maintaining offensive efficiency.  

The Spurs, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the Western Conference standings. Despite weekly standout performances of Rookie of the Year hopeful, Victor Wembanyama, who has averaged an impressive 20.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, and a league-leading 3.2 blocks per game in his debut season, the supporting cast, apart from Devin Vassell, has struggled to meet expectations. 

We expect another fierce battle between Wembanyama and Cavs’ big man, Jarret Allen. When these sides met in early January, Allen had 29 pts and 16 rebounds while Wembanyama had 24 and 10. Despite the expected fierce competition, we maintain our NBA prediction of a victory for the red-hot Cavaliers.

● Cleveland Cavaliers to win 

**Detroit Pistons vs. Orlando Magic**

After enduring the gloom of setting an NBA single-season losing record with 28 consecutive losses, the Detroit Pistons have finally found some rays of sunshine. While they still occupy the bottom spot in the Eastern Conference standings, they have secured 3 victories in their last 8 games, signalling a glimmer of hope amid their struggles. 


This will be the second of four meetings between both teams this season. When they met in Orlando back in early December, the Magic blew out Detroit in a 123-91 win, led by standout performances from Franz Wagner with 27 points and Paolo Banchero with 24 points. Since then, Paolo Banchero has earned his first All-Star selection in just his second season, following an impressive first year where he was named Rookie of the Year. Despite Banchero's stellar season, the Magic have hit a rough patch lately, slipping to 8th place in the East after enduring 6 losses in their last 10 games. While they have fared better at home (15-7) compared to on the road (10-16), the gulf in quality between the two teams suggests that the Magic should secure a much-needed win in this matchup.
