15th April, 2026. Champions League quarter-final first leg: Bayern München vs. Real Madrid in Munich. With a spot in the semi-final on the line, tensions were understandably high. However, it wasn’t just the players and fans of these clubs who were tensed up before the game; yours truly was also sweating over some serious indecision. Let me paint the picture.
So, three of my friends and I were going back and forth on how to approach this game from a betting perspective. Tunrayo stood his ground that Real Madrid was the better team and they’d win the game. His argument was that they were simply Real Madrid and had Kylian Mbappe. He went for HTUP Real Madrid, a feature which pretty much guarantees a win if Los Blancos led at half-time. Cletus (yes, I have a friend named Cletus) was also in #TeamMadrid, but he wasn’t as optimistic as Tunrayo. He decided to play it safe and went for 1UP Real Madrid. This meant all Real Madrid needed to do was take the lead at any point in the game and his bet would hit.
Tope and I were more in the Bayern camp. While we acknowledged Real Madrid’s European pedigree, we felt Bayern was the more in-form side and leaned heavily on that. I went for 1UP Bayern to play things safe, while Tope went with a HTUP Bayern win. So, there we sat - four friends, four different bets, one game. Cue the drama.
All it took was one minute. Real Madrid’s Arda Guler gave the 15-time champions a very early lead after a mistake from Manuel Neuer and just like that, Cletus’ 1UP Real Madrid bet was in. Omo, see tension! Within the next 44 minutes, we had even more drama, with four more goals flying in from both teams. But at half-time, it was Real Madrid who held a 3-2 lead. This meant Tunrayo’s HTUP Real Madrid bet was in too.
Now, the tension was really building for Tope and I. You know how time slows down when you’re winning? Well, when your bet is losing, time flies and you simply pray to the football gods. I looked at the time and it was the 88th minute. Real Madrid still held a 3-2 lead, but they were a man down, which gave me a slight glimmer of hope. Then, out of nowhere, Luis Diaz’s fantastic strike for Bayern made it 3-3 in the 89th minute. Hope.
Then came the moment of magic. In the 94th minute, Michael Olise picked up the ball, went straight at Ferland Mendy and curled it into the top-left corner, Arjen Robben style. 4-3 Bayern Munich! My bet 1UP Bayern had entered. Tope wasn’t out of the woods yet; he had to sweat out another two minutes of play, but when the final whistle was blown, Bayern were winners, which meant his HTUP Bayern bet had entered as well.
And just like that, all four of our bets had entered: 1UP Real Madrid, 1UP Bayern, HTUP Real Madrid and HTUP Bayern. It was, without a shadow of a doubt, the perfect game for these features, as it landed wins for everyone. That game will go into the online betting Hall of Fame.
Simply put, the 1UP (One Up) feature locks in your bet as a win as soon as your selected team takes the lead. This feature doesn’t take the full-time result into consideration, and it can land as early as the 1st minute or as late as stoppage time, as we saw from Real Madrid and Bayern respectively in the example above. All you need is for your selected team to take the lead at any point in the game. That’s it!
Now, this is not to be confused with Over 0.5 Goals, which is a market simply focused on a team getting on the scoresheet. A very relatable example would be Tottenham from the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, where they barely survived relegation. In 38 league games, they scored at least one goal (Over 0.5 Goals) in 31 of their 38 games. That’s an 81.2% success rate. However, they only took the lead (1UP) in 15 of those games (39.5%). So, you see, these two markets couldn’t be further apart, even though they might appear somewhat similar on the surface.
There are strategic ways to use the 1UP feature:
HTUP (Half-Time Up) means your selected team needs to have the lead at half-time. If they’re in front at the break, your bet lands, regardless of what happens in the second half. However, it doesn’t end there. What makes HTUP special is that if your selected team doesn’t have the lead at half-time, your bet doesn’t fail just yet. You still get the entire second half for your team to turn things around and win the game.
Simply put, for an HTUP bet to win, your selected team needs to either be in front at half-time OR go on to win the game at full-time. That extra layer of insurance is what makes HTUP such an interesting feature for your betting slip.
To put some numbers on it: in the 2025/26 Champions League group stage, Bayern München led at half-time in 71% of their home games. Real Madrid led at the break in 68% of all their UCL fixtures. Backing either side with HTUP in those games would have returned a hit rate significantly higher than a straight win bet at odds that still offered genuine value.
Here are some strategic ways to use HTUP:
And because we’re the best betting site in Nigeria, you can find HTUP markets at some of the best odds available, giving you even more reason to put the feature to work.
So, now that you know what these features mean, let’s take one more look at the Bayern vs. Madrid game:
Obviously, this was a very rare occasion where all four markets hit. Games like that come around once every few months. However, it perfectly highlights the power of the 1UP and HTUP features.
Using any one of these features is very straightforward:
The 2026/27 season is going to throw up plenty of nights like Munich - games where the result refuses to go in a straight line, where momentum shifts every few minutes.
That’s exactly when our online betting community should use 1UP and HTUP.
Use 1UP when you back a team to get in front but aren’t sure they’ll hold on. Use HTUP when you want double protection for your betting stake; half-time lead or full-time win. And if all four of your mates’ bets land on the same night, that’s a story worth telling for years.
