It’s been an incredible summer window for Europe’s top clubs who spent billions in a bid to strengthen their teams and increase their chances for success this season. 

About €2.8 billion in total has been spent by English clubs this summer. This is a world record, the most ever spent, with this exorbitant sum covering big moves like Declan Rice (€116m) to Arsenal, Moises Caicedo (€116m) to Chelsea, Rasmus Højlund (€75m) to Manchester United, Josko Gvardiol (€90m) to Manchester City, and Dominik Szoboszlai (€70m) to Liverpool. 

Over in Spain, Real Madrid signed the sensational Jude Bellingham (€103m) from Dortmund. The Englishman has since made an instant impact, recording 5 La Liga goals and an assist in 4 appearances. He also scored the game-winner in Madrid’s 2-1 win over Getafe on Saturday.  

Harry Kane (€100m) to Bayern was another interesting move. The England captain already has 3 goals this season in the Bundesliga and is poised to lead the Bavarians to a trophy-laden season. Other notable transfers in Europe include Randal Kolo Muani (€80m) and Ugarte (€60m) who both moved to SG.

**Winners & Losers** 

**Winners:** In the transfer window, just like any other endeavour in life, there are two sides – one side added the players they wanted and got rid of unwanted players, freeing up space on the wage bill and/or adding to the transfer kitty. Here are some of the clubs we think will be pleased with their transfer activity this summer: 


**Bayern Munich** 

It is rare to find centre-forwards that guarantee you both goals and creativity, but Harry Kane surely does that. The England captain is a goal machine whose movement allows him to bring teammates into play and create tons of goals. This is a move that helps improve the Bundesliga’s credibility and also increases Bayern’s chances of winning the UCL.

Bayern almost capped off an impressive summer with the capture of Joao Palhinha. Unfortunately for the Bavarian side, the deal fell off in the last minutes due to Fulham being unable to find a replacement. They also offloaded the likes of Sadio Mane, Lucas Hernandez, Benjamin Pavard, Marcel Sabitzer, and Yann Sommer  


**PSG** 

Neymar and Lionel Messi may have left the Parc des Princes, but at least, PSG still have Kylian Mbappe. With the Frenchman staying (for now), and the Ligue 1 champions having spent over €250m to bolster their team, the Parisien side will be looking to mount a concerted challenge to win the UEFA Champions League. 

They brought in Manuel Ugarte from Sporting Lisbon, Bradley Barcola (€45m) from Lyon. Ousmane Dembele (€50m) from Barcelona, Lucas Hernandez (€45m) from Bayern, and Milan Skriniar (Inter Milan) and Marco Asensio (Real Madrid) for free transfer. PSG also signed the coveted Randal Kolo Muani (€80m) from Eintracht Frankfurt and Benfica’s Goncalo Ramos on loan (with an €80m fee deferred until next summer).

**Arsenal** 

In a bid to repeat their title challenge last season when they matched Manchester City almost all the way, the Gunners have retooled ahead of the new season by making several astute signings. The sensational Declan Rice was acquired for a club-record fee of €116m while Jurrien Timber was acquired from Ajax and immediately proved his value before unfortunately rupturing his cruciate ligaments on his EPL debut. 

€78m forward Kai Havertz has started slowly for the North London club despite the German being brought in as an upgrade on Granit Xhaka while David Raya has had to bide his time after making the switch from Brentford.

**Barcelona** 

This summer’s transfer window marks the lowest spending spree for the Catalan giants in 18 years. While there are five fresh faces in Catalonia, the club has had to make prudent signings and financial outlays to comply with La Liga’s stringent Financial Fair Play regulations. 

The club managed to recoup some funds through the sales of Ousmane Dembele and Antoine Griezmann, as well as by allowing several players to depart on loan and releasing others whose contracts had expired. Despite these measures, they still couldn’t muster the financial clout for significant investments, making this their most frugal spending season since the 2005/06 campaign—a stark reminder of their ongoing financial challenges. 

On transfer deadline day, Barcelona secured loan deals for Portuguese internationals, Joao Cancelo and Joao Felix from Manchester City and Atletico Madrid, respectively. 

In addition, Inigo Martinez and Ilkay Gundogan were valuable additions to the squad, arriving on free transfers earlier in the window to infuse more experience into the reigning Liga champions’ roster. The remaining necessary signing was that of midfielder Oriol Romeu, acquired from Girona for €3.4 million. This marked a significant return for the former La Masia product, as he rejoined Barcelona after an absence of 12 years.  

While these new signings may come with substantial wage demands, it’s undeniable that the Catalan giants navigated this window with shrewdness and fiscal responsibility, making them our final transfer winner. 


**Transfer losers:** Just like there are winners, there are also teams who failed to meet their objectives over the course of the summer transfer window. While some of these teams can still make do until January or next summer, they will be wishing they handled their summer business better. 


**Liverpool** 

While they’ve made some good signings in Alexis Mac Allister (€42m) and Dominik Szoboszlai (€72m), their failure to invest in a top-class defensive midfielder could end up as a very costly mistake by the time this campaign ends.  

Despite being heavily linked to Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo after Fabinho departed for the Saudi Professional League, Liverpool could not land either of their main targets and had to settle for Wataru Endo from VfB Stuttgart as a replacement. 

The signing of Ryan Gravenberch for €40m from Bayern Munich is a step in the right direction but having lost seven players, only to sign four, many Liverpool fans worry the already thin squad will be spread even thinner. And that’s not factoring in SPL overtures for Mo Salah. 

As it stands, the Reds have accumulated 10 points from 12 available and will hope they can keep this run going for as long as possible. 

Despite their transfer woes;

 • Bet on Liverpool to finish in the EPL top two 

**Real Madrid** 

Despite signing the most in-form player in Europe (Jude Bellingham if you weren’t already sure), question marks persist around Real Madrid. To address the elephant in the room, they’re definitely not getting Kylian Mbappe this summer or in January and coupled with season-ending injuries to Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao, their desire to challenge for the biggest trophies this season might be a pipe dream. 

Benzema’s departure saw them lose their most dependable source of goals last season. Their plan for this season is obvious – Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo upfront with Bellingham linking midfield and attack and Joselu providing a steady presence from the bench. With Vinicius Jr already sidelined by injury already, it remains to be seen how this plan will hold up over the rest of the campaign.  

Luckily for them, Bellingham has made an immediate impact and if he keeps this up, he’ll be the favorite to win the Golden Boy award this season.

**Chelsea** 

With the signing of Cole Palmer on transfer deadline day, Chelsea’s total spend for the 2023/2024 season finally hit the £1,000,000,000 mark since Todd Boehly took over from Roman Abrahamovic. Axel Disasi, Robert Sanchez, Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Lesley Ugochukwu, Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku also joined in the summer transfer window.  

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Hakim Ziyech, Lewis Hall, Romelu Lukaku, Callum and Hudson-Odoi departed, some on temporary transfers to other clubs.  

The big problem with Chelsea is that, despite the huge sums spent, they look nothing like the world beaters their hefty financial outlay would ordinarily indicate. In their most recent game, they lost at home to Nottingham Forest and if the start of the season is accurate, this will not be an enjoyable campaign for Chelsea fans.

**African players who have joined new teams** 

It was a busy window for several leading African stars. Alex Iwobi (€25.7m) joined Fulham from Everton on transfer deadline day while Samuel Chukwueze (€20m) left Villarreal for AC Milan earlier in the window. Sofyan Amrabat and Andre Onana also joined Manchester United while Mohammed Kudus swapped Ajax for West Ham. Elsewhere, Nicholas Baleba joined Brighton from Lille while Nicholas Jackson followed Didier Drogba’s footsteps to sign for Chelsea.

**Victor Boniface and Ramy Bensebaini in the German Bundesliga** 

Boniface had an impressive stat of 17 goals and 12 assists in all competitions for Belgian side, Union Saint-Gilloise last season and has already taken to life in the German Bundesliga like a Duck to water. The 22-year-old Nigerian striker already has 5 goals and 2 assists in 4 games (DFB Pokal included) for Leverkusen and on current evidence, will be the best bet to challenge Harry Kane for Bundesliga Golden Boot honors this season.

Bensebaini, on the other hand, had been in Germany for four years before moving to Dortmund from Borussia Monchengladbach. As Raphael Guerreiro’s direct replacement, he has been a constant presence in the team and is playing quite well. 

Over in the French Ligue Un, Ismaila Sarr joined Olympique de Marseille from Watford. So far, his return to Ligue 1 has been a success with 2 goals and 2 assists in 6 matches.  

Lyon is renowned for nurturing young talents, and Ernest Nuamah will have plenty of opportunities to express his talent on French soil. The Ghanaian teenager is definitely one to watch out for!
