With less than a month to go (around 12 games), we’ve hit my favorite stretch of the NBA season. Teams like the Celtics, OKC and Cavs have locked in their playoff spots and are in rest-mode, while squads like the Jazz, Wizards, and Hornets are in full tank mode, eyeing a shot at top prospect Cooper Flagg in the draft. This makes basketball predictions a lot easier to make. With that in mind, here are our picks for the weekend:
I totally get easing up when you’re on the final lap of a race and everyone else is miles behind. What I don’t get is whatever’s going on with the Cavs right now. A week ago, they were rolling with a 56-10 record, riding a 16-game win streak, and making history as just the sixth team ever to have multiple 15+ game win streaks in the same season. For context, three of the previous five teams to pull that off reached the NBA Finals, and two (the ‘71 Bucks and ‘00 Lakers) won it all. So, this wasn’t just a great run; it was a historic one.
Now they’ve lost four straight and are 56-16. Last night’s loss to the Suns saw Kevin Durant torch them for 42 points, while Tyus Jones and Royce O’Neale combined for 31 off the bench. On the flip side, Donovan Mitchell had a brutal night, managing just 7 points in 31 minutes, while Jarrett Allen finished with 6 points and 6 rebounds.
Now, they head to Utah on the second night of a back-to-back, but so is the Jazz, who just hosted the Celtics. (The Jazz are the bottom of the West and aren’t exactly the scariest team to face). The Cavs have a choice—rest their stars (which, given their playoff position, would be the smart move) or go all out to stop the bleeding. My bet? Last night’s loss was a wake-up call, and they’ll throw everything at getting back in the win column.
This one’s a tricky call. On paper, it should be a straightforward win for the Celtics—they’ve won 9 of their last 10 and have looked even sharper since the All-Star break. But factor in that this is the second night of a back-to-back on the road, and they’ll be without key guys, and suddenly, it’s not so simple.
Veteran big man, Al Horford never plays back-to-backs, so he’s out. Jaylen Brown is still nursing a foot injury—he’s out too. Porzingis needs to be managed for the playoffs, so he’s definitely not suiting up. And honestly, I’d be shocked if Jayson Tatum plays. Although that one get better coconut head and hates sitting out road games.
Funny enough, when these teams met earlier this month, the Celtics also rested key players, but Derrick White (41 points) and Payton Pritchard (43 points) went off, becoming the first Celtics duo to each drop 40 in the same game.
Meanwhile, the Blazers have quietly put together a solid week, winning four straight and making a late push for a play-in spot. So, call me crazy, but my betting tips include the Blazers pulling off the upset and a few Celtics’ role players like Payton Pritchard and Baylor Scheierman having solid individual performances.
This is one of those late-season basketball games that no one cares about. I’d honestly be surprised if the arena is even 90% full. The Spurs sit 13th in the West, and with Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox out for the season, they’ve fully embraced the “Capture the Flagg” mission. The Raptors aren’t much different—they’d love to land Flagg too, but their tanking isn’t as blatant.
I don’t think the online betting community needs to overthink this; roll with the home team here, purely based on healthy talent available. Plus, the Spurs have been awful on the road, with an 11-22 record away from home.
The Pistons lost to the Mavs last night, which honestly surprised me—guess that just shows how highly I rate them. Cade Cunningham continued his stellar season, dropping 35/6/7, but it wasn’t enough as Dallas’ starters never really let them breathe.
Now, on the second night of a back-to-back, they head back to Detroit to host a Pelicans team that just got obliterated by the Timberwolves… by 41 points. That performance was so bad, someone in the organization deserves a weekend in custody. I mean, have some shame! That was their 8th loss in 10 games, which pretty much sums up their season—an insanely talented squad that just refuses to show up to work. And if you think a 41-point loss is rock bottom for New Orleans, think again. You won’t believe the last time they lost by 41 or more—it was Tuesday night… at home… to the Pistons. Yeah, they got smacked 127-81, a 46-point beat-down. So technically, last night’s 41 point loss was an improvement. Let that sink in.
Anyway, the Pistons still have a legit shot at finishing as high as 3rd in the East with the Knicks and Bucks struggling for consistency, so I’m backing them to get the win here.
