Over 2.5 goals: The leagues & teams that are likeliest to deliver this market over Christmas

by Astorre Cerebrone

13 Dec 2024

Football is entertainment, and there is nothing more entertaining than goals. This is why a lot of football rules have changed over the past 30 years to ensure that more goals are scored.

From the 2010s, the sport started to reap the benefits of the rule changes, as we began to see an explosion of goals. That was the decade that Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern, Manchester City and Juventus built superteams, with four of them breaking goal records at every turn.

This laid the foundation for what the 2020s have produced already, with so much more to come.

The Goals Trend

It was in the 2010s that Lionel Messi scored 91 goals in one year, a figure previously unthinkable. He and Cristiano Ronaldo scored goals for fun, with each producing 50+ goalscoring seasons 6 times. While many considered them outliers, there have been others who have hit that milestone as well.

Robert Lewandowski did it twice, while Luis Suarez and more recently, Erling Haaland, have each done it once. Many others like Edinson Cavani, Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Salah, Karim Benzema all hit 40+ goals.

In contrast with the 90s and 2000s when 20 goals was the acceptable tally for world class forwards, it is clear to see now that the standards have risen because more goals are being scored.

We have also seen more crazy score lines and high scoring games than we saw in the four decades before 2010. Scorelines like 10-2, 9-0, 8-2, 8-0 have happened and 6-0 score lines have become more routine for the bigger teams.

With the gap increasing between the big boys and the rest of the chasing pack, it is certainly no surprise. This season already, we have seen lots of teams produce high scoring games, with goals flying in almost every time they play.

What is clear is that we are going to keep seeing these score lines as long as money continues to be a big factor in the sport. This is where the opportunity to consistently make profit in online sports betting comes.

The Over 2.5 Market

The Over 1.5 market used to be a goldmine, with many latching onto it and raking in record profits but the odds for that market have continued to drop as more goals happen. That is expected. Seeing a minimum of two goals in a game is no longer rare and hard to find.

The probability of that happening these days is very high. This is why the next market that everyone is, and should be, looking at is the Over 2.5 market. Nowadays, that is where you will find real value.

With the Over 2.5 market, you are basically betting on the probability that a minimum of 3 goals will be scored in a game. You can either go for one team scoring at least 3 goals – which will give you way higher odds – or for both teams to collectively produce at least three goals.

Whether you are throwing it into a bet builder or a regular slip, there is major value.

The thing about this market is that you have to play it smart. You cannot just put random teams in your ticket just because the stats say that teams from that league average a certain amount of goals per game.

No matter how often goals are scored in a league, there will always be certain teams who go against the norm and produce completely different results whenever they play.

These teams will cut your tickets if you are not carefully making selections, ultimately leading to you constantly having Cut 1 and missing out on huge profits.

Fortunately, that is why we are here to guide you with our expert betting tips. Here are the leagues, teams and players that you should always look out for when playing the Over 2.5 market.

We know there are no sure odds, of course, but this is as close as it gets. More often than not, when they are involved, goals follow:

The Leagues

The English Premier League

There is no busier league than the English Premier League during the festive season. The games come in thick and fast, giving you the opportunity to make money as you celebrate the season.

One of the most straightforward EPL Football predictions is Over 2.5 goals. So far this season, the league has averaged 3.01 goals per game. That means that if you are looking at the Over 2.5 market, this is the perfect league to throw money on.

German Bundesliga

There are two match days  left before the Christmas break in Germany but there are big opportunities to make big profits before they close.

The league averages more goals than any other top five league – 3.25 goals per game. Every weekend, goals are guaranteed. It is up to you to carefully select the teams that are more likely to produce these goals and put them in your slip. Voila! Profit!

Dutch Eredivisie

The Dutch League is a very underrated league, one that not enough people bet on. It has a few teams that guarantee goals every weekend, with the entire league averaging 2.98 goals per game.

Four of the top 5 teams have already scored 30+ goals, with the last team – Utrecht – just under with 29 goals. If you are looking for Over 2.5 opportunities, look no further. Goals fly here between the top teams.

The Scottish Premiership

Like the English Premier League, this league does not go on break during Christmas. That means you will get the opportunity to bet on them right in the middle of the festivities.

The league has averaged 2.87 goals per game so far this season. You can be certain that more goals will be flying in as the stakes rise during the holidays.

The Clubs

The clubs below do not spare poor teams. They score as many as they can whenever they face them. In any gameweek where they are facing lower table clubs, put your money on them to score many.

Barcelona

Barcelona’s forwards have benefitted the most from Hansi Flick’s hiring, as their goal contribution numbers have exploded, leading to them topping La Liga table standings for months.

The likes of Lewandowski, Raphinha, Yamal and Dani Olmo have been scoring and assisting for fun. Even Ferran Torres has found his scoring boots recently. Basically, the Flick system guarantees that chances will consistently be created.

On top of that, Barcelona’s high line also ensures that they give up chances over and over again, allowing opponents to also get scoring chances.

Since the start of the season, Barcelona have scored 5 or more goals six times. 21 of their 23 games in all competitions have produced at least 3 goals.

If you had been playing Over 2.5 consistently in their games, you would have lost only twice out of 23 times. It’s a goldmine! They are home to Leganes on the 15th of December. There will be goals!

Chelsea

Maresca’s Marauding blues are the talk of the town, and it is clear to see why. After a slightly slow start to the season, they have become one of the best teams in Europe.

A lot of it is down to how easily they score. No matter who is playing, goals will come in Chelsea games. They have scored 5 or more goals four times. They are currently the highest scoring team in the Premier League with 35 goals in 15 games.

In the UEFA Conference League, they have completely destroyed all their opponents. In 5 games, they have scored 21 goals. So far this season, 15 Chelsea games have produced Over 2.5 goals, including their last four games. They face Ipswich, Everton and Crystal Palace during the festive period.

Before then, they face Brentford who are the league’s second top scorers currently. Put your money on them to do it in all these games.

PSV

In terms of guaranteeing goals, no team does it quite like PSV. When it comes to the Over 2.5 market, they are front and centre. So far this season, they have scored 56 goals in 15 league games.

The best part is that they score so many and also win, so you can get even greater value playing PSV to win and Over 2.5 goals. They have won 14 of their 15 league games this season.

You can also just go for PSV to score Over 2.5 goals and count your blessings. 17 of their 22 games this season have produced at least 3 goals, and they have had score lines like 4-4, 5-1, 7-1, 6-0, 6-1 and 5-2.

The goals always come when it’s them. They face Robin van Persie’s Heerenveen next, a team that has conceded 28 goals in 15 games, including a 9-1 defeat against AZ. Go for it.

The Players

Bukayo Saka

Bukayo Saka has entered a new level with Arsenal this season. In the league, he has 5 goals and 10 assists so far in just 14 games, and he leads Europe’s top 5 leagues in clear cut chances created.

When he got injured earlier, Arsenal could barely produce any threat up front. Apart from the threat he possesses in open play, he is the guy who delivers accurate crosses that have continued to produce goals for Arsenal. If Saka is playing a game, a goal is already certain.

In fact, a goal and assist is also possible. He has already produced 6 games with at least a goal and assist. Arsenal will be home to Ipswich on the 27th of December.

Rest assured, Saka will register at least two goal contributions. That’s one game to include in your Over 2.5 slip. Before then though, there is a home game against Everton that looks tasty.

Lamine Yamal

One of the key reasons why Barcelona score so much is Yamal’s creative and dribbling abilities. As long as he is playing, the likelihood of chances being generated is very high.

He has already assisted in 10 separate games this season, including in each of their last 3 games. So far, he has 6 goals and 11 assists this season.

While Raphinha and Lewandowski have grabbed the headlines by doing greater numbers, Yamal is the one that makes the attack work. Even without goal contributions, he opens up the game for others to score.

He is a big reason why Barcelona may end the season as La Liga winners. Expect him to destroy Leganes on the 15th!

Jamal Musiala

Musiala is one player that does not get the plaudits he deserves, but the season he is having could finally bring that kind of attention his way.

Every time Bayern have steamrolled their opponents, Musiala has been at the centre of it; orchestrating, creating, scoring and assisting. His recent form has tongues wagging and he is someone to look out for. With four goals and an assist in his last 4 games, his presence means goals for Bayern.

Leipzig at home on the 20th of December looks tasty; a team that has been in poor form and conceding a lot of goals.
