Poland vs Portugal

Poland have the most in-form striker in Europe right now in Robert Lewandowski. The country’s all-time leading scorer has scored 8 times in his last 5 games at club level, but his form this year for Poland has been poor. 

In 8 games this year, he has scored only 2 goals, both from the penalty spot. They will be hoping his recent form for Barcelona can translate for them. They have only won 1 of their last 5 games. 

Portugal, on their part, have won their two games in this group so far. In both games, ageless Cristiano Ronaldo scored. 

Following a disappointing Euros campaign, he has bounced back to show that he can still be the difference for them. 

Although they have already lost 3 games this year, they look capable of taking care of business against this Polish side. 

Full time Prediction:  Portugal haven’t lost to Poland since 2006 but their more recent games have been pretty close, although the last one came 6 years ago. On this year’s form, this should be a straightforward win for Portugal with some goals scored.

Croatia vs Scotland

Croatia halted a wretched run of form, having gone winless in four games, with a slender 1-0 victory the last time out against Poland. 

The winner was scored by Luka Modric who looks poised to remain in the team for the foreseeable future. A home game vs Scotland presents an opportunity to build on that win, against a struggling side.

Scotland have won only 1 of their 9 games so far this year, with that victory coming 7 games ago. The high of qualifying for the Euros from a tough group has faded, especially following their dire showing at the tournament in June. 

This is a daunting trip and they will once again look to Scott McTominay to give them some inspiration. 

Full time Prediction: This should end in a victory for Croatia. Scotland’s form doesn’t look like improving. Expect Croatia to be too much for them. 

Spain vs Denmark

The European champions have been the team to beat this year. Not even their lacklustre draw in Serbia last month can change that. 

They did bounce back quickly, beating Switzerland 4-1 Geneva, despite going a man down at 2-0. They have now won 10 of their 11 games since the 3-3 draw with Brazil in March. 

Even though they will be without Rodri and Carvajal for long, with both picking up ACL injuries, they still have enough squad depth to handle their absences.

Denmark have bounced back from their Euros disappointment with back-to-back wins against Serbia and Switzerland. The best thing about those victories is that they kept two clean sheets while looking dominant against both sides.

 A trip to Spain is one no team wants to take at the moment. If they will get anything from this game, it will be heavily reliant on how that defence handles the Spanish threat

Full time Prediction: Spain should win this game, although Denmark have it in them to put up a solid resistance. Expect a lot of goalmouth action, leading to shots and corner kicks.

Serbia vs Switzerland

5 games without a win, 2 wins out of 9 games in 2024. Serbia have had a torrid year, but they will take some inspiration from their impressive 0-0 draw against European Champions, Spain, a month ago.

They did go on to lose to Denmark after that, but this game against Switzerland is a good opportunity to get three points in this group. 

Switzerland have had a far better year, reaching the quarter finals of the Euros before bowing out on penalties to England. 

Since then, however, they have lost two straight games, conceding 6 goals. Up against a Serbian team that they have a recent rivalry against, they will be fired up to get one over their opponents once again. 

The previous two games between them have ended with the Swiss grabbing victories to break Serbian hearts.

Full time Prediction: This has a draw written all over it, but a less risky bet to go with is the goals market. Expect at least two goals in this game.

Peru vs Uruguay

Peru’s World Cup qualifying campaign has been a nightmare so far. Their record of 0 wins, 3 draws and 5 defeats has placed them at the bottom of the standings, at a time when 7 teams could be at the World Cup (with one of them qualifying for the playoffs) rather than the usual 5.

Their hopes are quietly slipping away, and a defeat here could be the beginning of the end. 

Uruguay are third on the standings under Marcelo Bielsa and have shown how good they can be against sides like Peru. 

That said, their form since making it out of their Copa America group has been disappointing. They have drawn 4 of their 5 games since then, losing one. In the four games they drew, 3 have been goalless. Their last two qualifiers ended goalless.

Full time Prediction: If there is a game for Uruguay to bounce back, it is this one. It is daunting playing at this venue but they should be able to pick up a win. 

Finland vs England

Finland looked on course to get their first points in this group on Thursday night but collapsed in the second half, conceding a late winner to Ireland. 

With three games played so far, they have three defeats, conceding 7 times. Another home game against England could see them extend that losing streak.

The English are still reeling from a shocking defeat at home to Greece on Thursday. Lee Carsely’s decision to play with a false 9 backfired spectacularly. 

Even though he fixed that later one and saw his team grab a late equaliser, they still managed to lose to Greece who now have 9 points out of 9. This game is an opportunity to bounce back, with Carsely now under immense pressure.

Full time Prediction: There should be no mistakes this time. Expect England to win, with a bunch of goals scored. Finland don’t seem to have it in them to put up a challenge.

Greece vs Ireland

Euro 2004 Champions, Greece, claimed their biggest scalp since that triumph on Thursday night, defeating England at Wembley. 

A brace by Vangelis Pavlidis secured the win, ensuring that they will come into this game full of confidence. 

They already defeated the Irish last month in Dublin. Now, in front of their fans, expectations are high for them to make it 12 points out of 12, strengthening their position in the group.

The Irish finally grabbed points in this group, after two 2-0 defeats in their opening two games. A late winner in Finland last time out has given them confidence coming into this game, which they will consider winnable. 

Full time Prediction: Greece are favourites and should win this, but there could be surprises. An Either Half bet could be the smart play.

Austria vs Norway

Austria are buzzing after their 4-0 demolition of Kazakhstan on Thursday night. This was a much needed win, after they had failed to pick up a win in their first two games of the group, getting 1 point out of 6. Their win makes the group more interesting. 

Their opponents are top of the group, but a win for Austria could see a change on top. 

Norway look unbeatable in this group, especially with Erling Haaland looking unplayable. Despite the absence of Martin Ødegaard through injury, they put three past Slovenia on Thursday to strengthen their position at the top of the group. They will come into this game full of confidence.

Full time Prediction: This looks like an obvious draw, with goals flying in everywhere. 

Armenia vs North Macedonia

Armenia’s draw with the Faroe Islands on Thursday was anything but disappointing, considering that they only equalized in the 93rd minute. Now, at home against the group leaders, they have an opportunity to wrestle control of the group from their unbeaten opponents.

North Macedonia already won this tie at home last month, and will be full of confidence after their 3-0 thrashing of Latvia in midweek. They know that a win in this game would all but cement their spot as group winners. 

Full time Prediction: This tight game will be decided on moments and could swing either way. It is more likely to end in a draw, however. 

USA vs Panama

The Poch era is officially here for the USA, and there is no better game for him to start with than this one. Panama knocked them out of the Gold Cup last year, then beat them at Copa America this year, destroying their chances of making the knockouts. 

Pochettino will set his team up against a formidable opponent that keeps getting stronger, testing new ideas with a squad that seemed to have run out of them.They have lost 3 of their last 4 games, halting a run of defeats in their 1-1 draw with New Zealand the last time out. 

Panama, on their part, will be motivated to ruin Pochettino’s debut. They love the role of spoilers where the USA are concerned. They will certainly field a competitive team, despite this being a friendly game.

Full time Prediction: Expect a lot of goalmouth action, although the USA might opt for a more conservative approach at certain points, in order to halt the leak at the back. Go for goals.
