Last Friday, English football was rocked by news of the Premier League’s decision to deduct 10 points (the highest points deduction in PL history) from Everton for breaching profit and sustainability rules. 

The club have said they will appeal but the Toffees are unlikely to have much success going down that route, so what happens now? 

 

**Why are Everton in this position?** 

The chickens finally came home to roost after years of overspending under former owner Farhad Moshiri. A Premier League-appointed panel found that Everton had suffered losses of £19.5m more than the £105m permitted over a three-year period. 

The Toffes have until November 27 to submit an appeal and the Premier League have a 7-day period in which to respond but there isn’t much optimism that the punishment will be lessened.  

It must be noted though that since Everton already admitted to being guilty, what they are appealing for is a reduced punishment, rather than establishing their innocence. Should their appeal process prove successful, the points deducted could be reduced or a fine could be imposed instead. 

However, the decision of the appeals board is final, and should they decide to uphold the Premier League’s initial punishment, then the Toffees face an uphill battle for their Premier League survival.

Having lost just one of their last four games in a return to form despite a slow start, Everton will be confident that they can get a positive result against Manchester United at Goodison Park this weekend.

**What this means for Manchester City** 

Manchester City are facing 115 charges of breaching the PL’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules, and they’re not alone on the naughty block. Chelsea could also face heavy sanctions as the London side is currently under investigation for alleged wrongdoing between 2012 and 2019.  

There has been widespread speculation in sporting circles that Everton’s punishment could be a sign of things to come for erring English Premier League giants, Chelsea, and Manchester City if they’re found guilty of similar breaches.  

Since the PL deducted 10 points from Everton for a single breach, Could Manchester City find themselves light 1150 points for their 115 offenses? Probably not, as these are two different situations. While Everton have been slammed with a points deduction for poor finances and significant losses, City’s charges are way more severe. The Premier League champions have been accused of cheating, lying and “failing to provide a true and fair view of the club’s financial position.” 

Essentially, City failed to provide accurate financial information over a nine-year period (2009-2018), a period in which they won the league title three times. In response to the accusations, the Etihad club maintain that they are absolutely not guilty and have welcomed the opportunity to argue their position in court.  

Luckily for fans of the Cityzens, off-field distractions are unlikely to affect City’s odds of success on the pitch. They’re still favorites to defeat Liverpool when they welcome their biggest rivals over the past decade to the Etihad over the weekend.

**Are Chelsea also in trouble?** 

The Blues are also in trouble with the Premier League over payments tied to their ex-owner, Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea have already been fined 10m for historical breaches and they could face a points deduction as well if there are even more breaches detected during the PL’s ongoing investigation. 

On the field though, we are witnessing a resurgence from Mauricio Pochettino’s men and in their last game against defending champions, Manchester City, they certainly looked like a side full of confidence. If they can replicate that gameplay going forward, they should end the season better than they started it.

**What punishments will Man City & Chelsea face if found guilty?** 

Should either of the two EPL giants be found guilty, the punishment would be groundbreaking. An independent panel would have the right to punish a club found guilty of such magnitude of breaches with relegation, in accordance with [Premier League rule W.51.](https://www.thedailystar.net/shout/news/what-possible-punishments-await-man-city-following-pl-allegations-3241596) 

In accordance with the provided guidelines, sanctions could range from stern warnings to potential points deductions, and in severe cases, outright relegation from the Premier League.  

The accused club will of course possess the right to appeal any proven allegations or charges. 

 

**Will Arsenal and Liverpool be awarded any titles if City are found guilty?** 

Since the charges cover a period of 9 years between 2009 to 2018, Arsenal will not be awarded any titles since they never came second in any of the three years City were crowned champions. (2012, 2014, 2018) 

It is also unlikely that City will lose any of their titles at all. A significant points deduction should be the most severe punishment to be meted out. One of unprecedented proportions – 20, even 30 points.  

Currently however, City maintain their innocence and the case remains up in the air, with no resolution in sight. 

For now, Everton have landed on the Premier League’s sword and things could get worse with last season’s three relegated clubs (Leicester City, Leeds and Southampton) all [preparing to sue for compensation](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/everton-sued-compensation-premier-league-news-b2449722.html), believing they would still be in the top flight if not for Everton’s breaches.
