Jurgen Klopp will go down as one of the greatest managers of all time, without a doubt. The way he has transformed Liverpool; the style of play, epitomized by high intensity, high pressing, and expansive, attractive football, should never be taken for granted. 

After shocking the footballing world with his decision to step down as Liverpool boss in the summer, the 56-year-old is now on an emotional farewell tour, hoping to end his nine-year tenure on a triumphant note.

**Klopp’s Final Season: Act 1 – Carabao Cup Triumph** 

Klopp has exceeded expectations since his appointment and one of his final games in charge could be the Europa League final in Dublin. Winning it would mean he has lifted every trophy he competed for since joining the club nine years ago. 

The Liverpool boss has insisted that he does not want the next few months to be about him, but unfortunately, there is little he can do to control the narrative at this point. **Act 2 – The Premier League title race** 

The 56-year-old has won everything possible at Liverpool, although not at the volume he would have hoped for. One of Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest regrets at Manchester United was that he only won two European Cups. Klopp would have had three at Liverpool but for the two final defeats against Real Madrid. His EPL stats are fantastic, and he should have had more than the solitary league title from 2019-20 if he didn’t run into Guardiola’s City machine. Liverpool’s point totals of 97 and 92 in 2019 and 2022 would have been enough to win the title in almost every other season. 

His record as one of the Premier League’s greatest managers is not in doubt, and purely from a statistical standpoint, the German has the third-best points-per-game record in League history. That puts him ahead of legendary EPL past winners managers Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger, and just behind Sir Alex Ferguson, and Pep Guardiola. 

His legacy is solidified, even without winning another trophy. And yet, the former Borussia Dortmund boss will be keen to add to the seven major honors he has won with Anfield before he bows out. The Reds are second in the EPL standings, tied on 64 points with Arsenal, who have a superior goal difference.  There are 10 games left to play, and with a single point separating the top 3, this is shaping up to be the most keenly contested title race in years. 

Liverpool will rely on their unbeaten home form, stretching across 55 games in all competitions since October 2022, to carry them over the line. Their biggest challenges between now and the end of the season include facing Manchester United away, hosting Tottenham, and a tricky trip to Villa Park to face Unai Emery’s Aston Villa.

There are potentially winnable EPL games against Sheffield, Brighton, and Crystal Palace on the horizon, and Klopp’s men cannot afford to take their foot off the gas if they want to win the title and give their manager the perfect parting gift. 

**Act 3 – Life after Klopp**  

Klopp is leaving behind a young, talented, and exciting group of players. The squad needs a few tweaks but not a complete overhaul.

In United’s case, David Moyes was handed a squad, past its peak, and in need of major reconstruction.  At Anfield, the new manager will inherit a squad of players with significant potential, as well as superstars still in their prime like Virgil Van Dijk, Mo Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. 

**Act 4 – Potential replacements** 

There have been several names linked to the job and Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso has emerged as an early favourite, especially among the fans. The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder is beloved by the supporters and is currently doing an excellent job in the Bundesliga, guiding his team to a 10-point lead over Bayern, with a run of 38 games unbeaten across all competitions.  

Brighton boss, Roberto De Zerbi has also been mentioned as a potential replacement, and his desire to play on the front foot and impose his ideas on proceedings will certainly delight the fans.  There are other names in the fray as well, former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane, Sporting boss Ruben Amorim, and Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann.  

Klopp has successfully turned Anfield into arguably the scariest stadium in Europe, and this is perhaps the perfect time for a manager worth his salt to take the job and enhance not only his reputation, but also follow the path laid out so expertly by the departing German. They will hope their new man can win the big trophies in his first season, but he will not be sacked for finishing second, or third.
