Norway are clear favorites to win Group A, and their credentials make it easy to understand why. Their coach, Hege Riise, brings invaluable experience as a World Cup winner in 1995 and the recipient of the tournament’s Golden Ball that year. The return of 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, Ada Hegerberg further strengthens the squad. Hegerberg was absent from the 2019 tournament due to a disagreement with the Norwegian Football Federation. Her presence alongside talented players such as Caroline Graham Hansen (Barcelona), Guro Reiten (Chelsea), and Frida Leonhardsen Maanum (Arsenal) adds depth and quality to the team. Keep an eye on Guro Reiten, as she had an impressive performance in the WSL, finishing with the highest number of assists (11). She ranked among the top five WSL players for creating open-play chances (37) and delivering passes into the opposition’s box (140). Reiten’s contributions were vital in helping Chelsea secure three titles, solidifying her status as one of the team’s standout performers. **Group B (Australia, Canada, Nigeria & Ireland)** 

We expect Australia to emerge as the winners of this group, while the remaining three teams will have to compete for second spot. Normally, Canada would have been the favorites to win the group, especially after securing the gold medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. However, they have been plagued with a string of injuries in recent months. The influential midfielder, Desiree Scott, also known as "The Destroyer," could not make the team because of a knee surgery, though Nichelle Prince was included in the squad despite not being fully recovered from an Achilles injury. Experienced forward, Janine Beckie, underwent an ACL operation in March and consequently could not be part of the team while, defender Jade Rose had to leave the pre-tournament camp because of an injury.  

Nigeria is the most experienced team in this group having appeared in every edition of the World Cup, but that will count for very little. Off-field issues, which have unfortunately become commonplace in Nigerian football, have consistently served as distractions for a team that possesses some of the most talented players on the continent. The country will rely on their star forward, Asisat Oshoala, hoping that she can rise above the chaotic circumstances. Oshoala is a revered figure in African women’s football, having won a remarkable 5 African Women’s Footballer of the Year awards. If she scores a goal in this year’s World Cup, she will become the first African player to score in three different FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments. Australia’s expected victory in this group cannot be down to their home advantage alone. Although their 4th place finish in the Tokyo Olympics may have been somewhat disappointing, it served as a foundation for them to build upon. **Group C (Costa Rica, Japan, Spain & Zambia)** 

Group C of the World Cup holds a great deal of anticipation. Despite being the lowest ranked country in the tournament (77), debutants Zambia, brings an exciting element with their young duo, Racheal Kundananji and Barbra Banda. Banda, who scored two hat-tricks at the Olympics, emerged as the joint-second top scorer despite her team’s failure to advance beyond the group stage. Kundananji had an impressive season with Madrid CFF in Spain, netting 25 league goals, only two shy of Alba Redondo, the tournament’s leading scorer. Redondo, who scored 27 league goals, displayed remarkable goal-scoring prowess, finding the back of the net in 19 out of the 30 league games she played, which translates to the highest percentage (63.3%) among players in Europe’s top leagues. The Spanish team also possesses a wealth of creativity besides their goal-scoring abilities. Ona Batlle recorded nine assists for Manchester United last season, tying for second place in the Women’s Super League (WSL), while also creating 36 chances - impressive numbers for a full-back. However, one potential concern for the Spanish team is the ongoing discord between the players and the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Last year, 15 players stood down from the national team to shine more light on issues on how the women’s team was treated by the RFEF and only three of them have been included in this World Cup squad. Although the team remains talented, this unresolved issue might pose problems in the future.

**Group D (China, Denmark, England & Haiti)** 

The Lionesses are not only expected to win this group, but they might also reach the finals and, perhaps, even win the tournament. **Group E (Netherlands, Portugal, USA & Vietnam)** 

USA is not only expected to win this group, they’re expected to dominate, especially considering it contains two debutants in Portugal and Vietnam. USA’s recent dominance at the World Cup sounds like a joke. They’ve won the last two editions of the tournament and have their sights set on becoming the first team - in both the men’s and women’s categories - to win the World Cup three times in a row. In their 14 games played across the last two World Cups, they’ve won 13 games and drawn one, scoring a jaw-dropping 40 goals in that stretch - an average of 2.9 goals per game. Group F is expected to be a challenging competition between two teams, Brazil and France, both of whom have underperformed recently. However, we think France are slight favourites to win the group. France underwent a change in leadership back in March when long-term coach Corinne Diacre was dismissed because of internal conflicts with senior players, including Wendie Renard. Hervé Renard has taken over as the new manager, making him only the second person to lead teams in both the men’s and women’s World Cups (after John Herdman for Canada). With successful stints coaching Zambia and Ivory Coast to AFCON titles, Renard brings a wealth of high-level experience to the French team, who hope he can make the team as captivating as his distinctive golden hair and spotless white shirt.  

Wendie Renard, France’s captain, returns to the squad after Diacre’s dismissal. Despite being a defender, the towering Lyon player emerged as the top scorer for France in the 2019 World Cup, netting four goals, three of which were headers. Eight-time Champions League winner and Veteran forward, Eugénie Le Sommer will play an important part having also returned from an exile imposed by Diacre. Coming off a very productive league winning season in Lyon, she has the chance to overtake Gaëthane Thiney as France’s all-time World Cup appearance record holder.

**Group G (Argentina, Italy, South Africa & Sweden)** 

Sweden may not strike fear in men’s football, but they do in women’s football. They have taken part in every edition of the tournament, along with the United States, Germany, Norway, Brazil, Japan, and Nigeria. Currently ranked 3rd in the world, they are rightfully considered favorites to win their group. However, Sweden has experienced unfortunate luck in finals. In the last Olympics, they had to settle for a silver medal after losing on penalties to Canada, though Stina Blackstenius’ 5 goals were a positive for the team. At the 2003 World Cup, Germany defeated them in the final through a bitter Golden Goal.  

In the UEFA Euros, they have reached four finals, but have only won once, which was the inaugural tournament in 1984. 5 losses in 5 finals across 3 competitions since their triumph in 1984 has left a bitter taste in their mouths, but they believe that fortune can favor them this year. AC Milan’s Kosovare Asllani is brimming with confidence and has cautioned against underestimating Sweden. While there may be some concerns in defense, their attacking lineup, which includes talented players like Fridolina Rolfö from Barcelona Femeni, should be more than capable of winning them the group.

**Group H (Colombia, Germany, South Korea & Morocco)** 

We expect Germany to comfortably win the group, given their impressive track record in World Cup openers and group stage matches. They have remained undefeated in their last eight World Cup openers and have lost only once in 24 group games. Their performance in last year’s Euros, where they finished as runners-up to England is an example of how strong they can be. Lena Oberdorf, a versatile midfielder/defender, stood out in the Euros and was awarded the Young Player of the Tournament. Despite being just 20 years old at the time, she featured in five out of six games, missing only one because of a yellow card suspension—an exceptional achievement. Another player to watch in the German team is Alexandra Popp, who has a remarkable record of winning trophies. She has led FCR 2001 Duisburg and Wolfsburg to Champions League titles and has won 22 titles at the club level. Popp’s success extends to the international stage as well, where she won an Olympic Gold medal in 2016 and achieved victory in the U17 UEFA Women’s Championship and U20 Women’s World Cup. In the previous year’s Euros, she finished as the joint-top scorer alongside Beth Mead, showcasing her goal-scoring prowess.
